I have a thing for creating ice cubes that are not actually ice cubes. And considering the fact that coffee basically streams through my veins, I was over-the-moon about these yummy Coffee Cubes that I will be making all the time to go along with a smooth and delicious cup of cold brew. Check out the recipe for the cubes below. It is super easy and you will not want to miss it!
For the first thirty years of my life I did not enjoy nor understand the hype about coffee. The few sips in three decades that I’d taken had left scalding, bitter impressions. Then one day, six or seven years ago, my husband and I were traveling with our two young boys. We had been sleeping in hotels for a number of days in a row and we were exhausted. I’m talking, feeling-like-DYING tiredness had pressed down on us. We had a long drive in store that day and looking across the table while eating a continental breakfast I could see that my husband’s exhaustion mirrored my own. He got up from the table with determination and came back with two coffees. “We need these,” he said with conviction, so I took a sip. There is nothing fantastic about hotel coffee, but that day was the first of my love affair with the caffeinated bean.
Since that day my love for coffee has grown immensely. I have enjoyed many different varieties, from frothy lattes to bold dark roast varieties and everything in between. I am a self-professed daily coffee drinker. There are days when I crave the caffeine kick, but on most days I just thoroughly enjoy sitting down with a delicious warm or cold cup in my hands, depending on my mood.
I was super excited about trying the new Dunkin’ Donuts Cold Brew products. I had tried many a cold brew at coffee shops over the years, but I’d never attempted creating my own at home.
Before I tell you about my experience with this product (hint: LOVED IT), let me explain what cold brew is! Cold brew is a brewing method where coffee grounds are steeped in cold water for 8-12 hours. The colder temperature brings out the rich, smooth flavor of coffee but without the bitterness or acidity. In short: a dream come true!
Let me tell you, this product is going to be a staple in my home from now on. The process of making this delicious drink is easy. And the end result was better than I ever could have dreamed. I didn’t say much to my husband about what I was doing, but he noticed the pitcher of coffee in the fridge and asked if it was ok to try. He poured himself a small cup, along with one of my Coffee Cubes, and ran out of the house for errands. He came back home raving. It is not often that his cuteness raves about anything and when he does, I know it’s a keeper. After enjoying a cup myself, I 100% agreed with his assessments which went as follows: Dunkin’ Donuts Cold Brew is smooth and completely lacks bitterness that can so often be associated with coffee. It packs a punch of caffeine and even a small glass is enough to perk a person up for a few hours.
Fill a 2-quart pitcher with 4 cups of cold water. Add 2 Coffee Filter packs (contents of 1 pouch) to the pitcher and completely submerge the filter packs in the water.
Place the pitcher in the refrigerator and let it steep overnight, anywhere between 8-12 hours.
Remove the filters and add 3 cups of cold water. Customize as desired! I prefer adding Coffee Cubes (recipe below).
