The spendy little nut
11.30.2010
Have you purchased pine nuts recently? I literally started choking when my husband read the price off the receipt. $15! Fifteen dollars! FIFTEEN DOLLARS! For a 5-oz. jar of pine nuts! What the heck?
I did 20 seconds worth of internet research and learned that most pine nuts come from China, where there has been a poor harvest for the last few years. That, combined with this crunchy little nut's supremely high demand is causing these crazy prices.
Elijah saw me taking a photo of this jar tonight and asked if he could have a nut. "NO! I mean, ok, just ONE."
I will be using every last one of these babies. Yay, more pesto!

Try making pesto with walnuts - we actually prefer it over the pine nut version now! And as an added bonus, they are better for you.
this is so funny because this was a huge topic at the scharenbroich thanksgiving!
They are insanely expensive lately. I tend to just pass them by and pretend I didn't see them...ehehehe.
I haven't gotten them in a few years, but Costco usually carries a giant bag of pine nuts for probably the same price as that little jar. It might be worth checking out if you go through a lot of it. I think you can store them in the freezer to keep them fresh since it is a large bag. :)
